Birth of Lord Krishna:
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was born in the city of Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, who were imprisoned by Devaki's brother, King Kansa. Krishna's divine birth took place at midnight, which is why Janmashtami celebrations typically involve midnight prayers and festivities.

Fasting and Devotion:
Many Hindus observe fasts on this day, either abstaining from all food or consuming only fruits and milk until midnight when Lord Krishna is believed to have been born. Devotees spend the day in prayer, meditation, and reading the Bhagavad Gita or other sacred texts related to Lord Krishna.

Midnight Celebrations:
The birth of Lord Krishna is celebrated at midnight with great enthusiasm. Devotees gather at temples, sing devotional songs (bhajans), and offer prayers and offerings to the deity. The main event is the "Dahi Handi" ceremony, where a clay pot filled with curd or butter is suspended at a height, and groups of young men and children form human pyramids to break it. This ritual symbolizes Krishna's love for butter and his playful nature.

Temple Visits:
Many people visit Krishna temples, especially the famous ones like the Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan and the ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) temples around the world. In various parts of India, cultural performances, including dance dramas and plays depicting episodes from Krishna's life, are staged. These performances are known as "Ras Leela" and are a significant part of the Janmashtami celebrations.

Offerings and Prasad:
Devotees prepare a variety of delicious dishes as offerings to Lord Krishna, which are later distributed as prasad (blessed food) among the devotees. Sweets like makkhan (butter), kheer (rice pudding), and various milk-based sweets are commonly prepared.

Decorations:
Homes, temples, and streets are adorned with colorful decorations, rangoli (decorative designs made with colored powders), and flower arrangements to create a festive atmosphere.
